This day of training will provide psychologists with the key concepts in community disaster and vulnerability. This program is co-hosted with the Red Cross of Georgia, and will provide a Red Cross certificate at the completion of the program.

Are you interested in training through the American Red Cross but don't have more than a day to spare?

The Georgia Psychological Association, Red Cross of Georgia, Athens Area Psychological Association and Georgia Department of Behavioral Health are very pleased to provide a "Disaster Mental Health (DMH) Training - Done in a Day." This day of training will provide an understanding in the nature of disasters, the roles of participants in disaster response and the clinical guidelines and skills needed for Red Cross DMH volunteers.  

IMPORTANT: Registration for this event is a TWO-STEP process.

Step 1) You MUST fill out the Red Cross Volunteer Application before in order to complete your registration.
The application includes a background check and takes approximately 90-110 minutes. Click the link to begin the application. We will confirm your registration in the training after you complete all six (6) steps of the registration.

There are two fee options. The training itself is free. Yet, for convenience we are offering lunch and snacks at $25 for the day. If you would like to bring your own lunch and snacks, feel free to do so, and select the $0 option.

Continuing Education Information:

The Georgia Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Georgia Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

CE Hours: 6

Level: Intermediate

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify disaster related stress in adults and children
  • Understand the concept of disaster mental health triage and use PsySTART to apply this concept
  • Define and be able to apply the principles of Enhanced Psychological First Aid
  • Identify when to use other Intervention Strategies (Crisis Intervention, Casualty Support, Advocacy)
  • Understand how to provide Staff Mental Health support on a disaster operation


Other Information:

Cost: The training is free to everyone. There is a $25 optional fee for lunch and snacks. You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks if you would like to opt-out of the food fee.

Can I get continuing education? Certificates will be given to all participants. GPA is an APA-Approved sponsor. If you are not a psychologist, please check with your licensing board to verify if this program qualifies for your profession.

Can I register without filling out the Red Cross Training Volunteer Application? No, we must reserve seats for those who have completed the full Red Cross Training Volunteer Application.

Parking: Parking is free directly in front of the building. Additional free parking is available across the street at Resource Medical.

Refunds/Cancellations: Refunds must be requested by Wednesday, August 12 at 8:30am. Since the fee is covering food costs, we will not be able to issue any refunds for cancellations within 48 business hours of the event. Cancellations must be submitted in writing to Amy Dietrich at
