CE Workshop: Integrating Positive Psychology Exercises into Psychotherapy for Depression

During this workshop, participants will be introduced to the concepts of a therapeutic process, HHII, which supports deep sustainable change. This method can be integrated into a therapy practice, providing another way to help clients.

This workshop will describe evidence-based contributions of interventions developed by Positive Psychology and relate them to the treatment of depression in an individual therapy context. Techniques will be described dominantly from a Cognitive-Behavioral framework, and at least 2 interventions will be practiced within the workshop. Participants will be asked to take a relatively short online questionnaire beforehand and bring the results to the workshop.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to explain connection of behavioral interventions to reducing depressive symptoms and risk, as well as describe how they can be used with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  2. Participants will practice at least 2 and describe at least 2 additional evidence-based techniques which can be integrated into treatment.
  3. Participants will be able to differentiate multiple pathways which contribute to well-being and positive mood states and connect strategies to these paths.

About the Presenter:

Heather Hopper is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Atlanta. She received her PhD from the University of Miami and has previously worked for Georgia Tech, Talbott Recovery Campus, and The University of Washington. She is a past member and chair of the CE committee and was named a Fellow of GPA. She has been interested in integrating positive psychology into clinical practice since Martin Seligman presented at the GPA Annual Meeting in 2002.
