Workshop Title: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety Across the Developmental Spectrum

Workshop Description:

Anxiety and its disorders affect millions worldwide, and are associated with significant morbidity, comorbidity, and functional impairment. Fortunately, cognitive-behavioral interventions have proven efficacious for treating anxiety disorders. This workshop will focus on guiding theory, and on implementation of treatment procedures that flow from this theoretical foundation. An empirically supported approach will be emphasized, and multiple clinical examples will be used to enrich the discussion. Specific issues pertaining to clinical management of anxiety in diverse populations will be emphasized, and ample opportunity will be provided to discuss specific theoretical topics or case material as per audience interest and preference.

Learning Objectives

1. To provide patients and families with an accurate summary of the extant treatment outcome literature and its implications for clinical care in specific cases.

2. To explain the theoretical foundation of cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders, with emphasis on emotional processing theory.

3. To develop clinical strategies to address the most common roadblocks to successful implementation of CBT, including family accommodation, motivational issues, and patient use of subtle avoidant strategies that attenuate clinical outcomes.
