Workshop Title: Post Traumatic Growth: History, Concepts, and Models for Growth

Workshop Description:

Post-traumatic Growthis the positive psychological change that an individual can experience as a result of a struggle with challenging life circumstances.  This type of growthinvolves significant challenges to the adaptive resources of the individual and/or an individual's way of understanding their world and their place in it. The concept and process of post traumatic growth is not the same as that of resilience, with its own definitions and models. This workshop will review the development of the concept of growth through adversity, the crucial concepts of post traumatic growth, and models for achieving such growth. The application of these models will also be discussed as they apply to diverse populations.

Learning Objectives:

  1.  Attendees will be able to summarize the basic definitions and concepts related to post traumatic growth.
  2. Attendees will be able to differentiate between the various approaches to enhance growth in adversity and how multicultural and individual differences should be taken into account.

  3. Attendees will be able to apply some of the concepts presented into their current area of practice.
