Workshop Title: The What and How of Effective Dialectical Behavioral Therapy


Workshop Description: 

DBT is an evidence based psychotherapy developed specifically for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder and other disorders characterized by emotional and behavioral dysregulation. This workshop will address the philosophical underpinnings and core components of DBT. Participants will be taught the biosocial model and how to implement acceptance, change, and dialectical treatment strategies. In addition, participants will learn how to utilize chain analysis techniques to facilitate behavioral change. The workshop will also include clinical discussion and acknowledge the gaps in the literature and how DBT may need to be molded to specifically address diversity variables. 

Learning Objectives

 

  1. Describe the dialectical framework of DBT.
  2. Describe the biosocial model.
  3. Apply dialectical treatment strategies.
  4. List the 6 levels of validation.
  5. Identify primary and secondary targets for treatment.
  6. Utilize diary card and chain analysis techniques to facilitate behavior change

      About the Presenter:

       

      Dr. Meghna Patel is the Clinical Director of the DBT team at the Atlanta VA and has served in this role for 5 years. She currently oversees an interdisciplinary team of 18 clinicians, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and trainees, serving the most acutely dysregulated patients within the VA system. Most recently, she has joined a nationwide DBT team that provides DBT trainings to VA facilities across the country.

       

       

       

      Dr. Martha Calamaras completed a DBT focused internship and has served as a clinical psychologist on the DBT team at the Atlanta VA for 3 years. She is considered as the inhouse DBT specialist at the Atlanta VA and regularly presents on DBT VA-wide. She is also leads DBT groups at a private practice, Daily DBT, LLC.

      *If a GPA Student Member needs continuing education credits, he/she will need to pay the higher GPA Member fee regardless of status as a student.

      Cancellation Policy:
      All cancellations must be submitted in writing to Hannah Steinberg via email (admin@gapsychology.org). A $35 cancellation fee will be charged for any cancellations prior to September 20, 2019. No refunds will be given after September 20, 2019.
