Workshop Title: Understanding the Dementia Alphabet: from Alzhemier Disease (AD) to Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)

Workshop Description:

Our population is rapidly aging, and the prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders is increasing as well.  The focus of this workshop is to present a review of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, among others.  An explanation of the typical cognitive and emotional profiles of these disorders used for differential diagnoses will be provided.  Stages of dementia will be reviewed, with a focus on common cognitive and psychological impairments that commonly occur at each stage. Both pharmacological and behavioral treatments will be discussed. Working with families and caregiver burnout will also be addressed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to explain the difference between different types of dementia, including neuropathology and functional changes.
  2. Participants will be able identify the mild, moderate, and severe stages of neurodegenerative disorders based on functional changes, as well as common cognitive and behavioral challenges seen in each stage.
  3. Participants will be able to utilize specific behavioral and supportive therapeutic techniques in working with individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
