This 3-hour workshop will include an experiential sharing and demonstration of Deep Empathy. Based on his articles, Mutual Affect Therapy and the Emergence of Transformational Empathy (2001) and Mindfulness, Authentic Connection, and Making “Right” Decisions (2013), Dr. Ryback will share his experience of discovering his own path to transformative empathy and demonstrate the process—so that participants who are interested in learning the process can begin to experience it themselves. Therapeutic alliance can be enhanced more deeply, as described in the emerging literature called Deep Empathy. Experiential small group interaction will help us get a sense of this new approach.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Apply modern neuroscience to classical Freudian and Jungian theory as well as to mindfulness and to the decision-making process.
  2. Discuss the history of the Deep Empathy movement.
  3. Demonstrate the process of Deep Empathy in small groups.
  4. Discuss the application of Kahneman’s book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, to the right brain/left brain model and to the new brain/old brain model.
  5. Describe the role of emotions in fostering transformative empathy.
  6. Critique the application of Damasio’s model to Deep Empathy.
  7. Explain the neuroscience of making “right” decisions using the mindfulness component.
