* Third seminar of a three-part series as a requirement to be part of the GPA’s Speakers Bureau.

This 3-hour program is the last in a 3-part series to help participants learn how to effectively engage the media and the general public with psychologically-relevant information. Participants will have an opportunity discuss the importance of ethical and culturally-sensitive message delivery; the nuances of how to be an effective communicator; and how to avoid public speaking traps. They also get hands-on applied training in the delivery of media interviews and psycho-educational workshops. Those psychologists who complete the series will be eligible to be part of the GPA Speakers Bureau.

Pre-Requisite: To register for this workshop, you must have attended/registered for “The Power of Preventive Care: Ethical Matters When Engaging in Prevention and Public Education” as well as “Speaking to Diverse Audiences: Assumptions & Considerations.”

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review what makes an effective, ethical, culturally-sensitive presentation or media interview, based on all the information discussed in the 3 workshops that comprised this CE series
  2. Demonstrate how to ethically respond to and interact with the media and the general public when engaging in public presentations and/or media interviews
  3. Utilize cultural-sensitivity when addressing questions/concerns from audience or media staff

    About the Speakers Bureau Program:

    The Speakers Bureau is responsible for responding to programming requests from the community (including groups, organizations, and businesses) as well as conducting interviews with print, radio and televised media. To appropriately compensate workshop presenters for their time to both prepare and deliver quality programs, the Georgia Psychological Association will institute a fee for programs and workshops to be delivered to outside organizations and groups. These workshops may be for psycho-educational programs, professional development, or continuing education seminars for non-psychologists. A portion of this fee (30%) will go to the GPA Foundation to support future public education activities and efforts.

    Fee Schedule

    Full Day Program (3 ½-6 Hours): $1500 ($1050 to the presenter; $450 to GPA Foundation)
    1 ½ hours to 3-Hour Program: $1000 ($700 to the presenter; $300 to GPA Foundation)
    1 ½ hours or Less Program: $500 ($350 to the presenter; $150 to GPA Foundation)

    The Georgia Psychological Association understands and recognizes that psychologists will need to take time from their typical professional responsibilities to provide this service. Therefore, the purpose of compensating presenters is to encourage participation in the delivery of workshop programs by Speakers Bureau participants. Further, it is expected that the presenters will take the time/energy to tailor the workshop to the needs of the requesting group and to update information as needed. As such, the compensation is for both the time to deliver the workshop as well as to plan the program.

    Presenters will not be compensated for programming requests for APA public education campaigns (i.e., mind/body health, violence, resilience) or media requests.

    GPA Speakers Bureau Participation Requirements

    In an effort to strengthen and expand the Georgia Psychological Association’s Speakers Bureau, the Public Education Committee has decided to implement a new three-part training series that GPA members could complete to become a part of the Speakers Bureau in 2011. To help ensure a minimal level of media competency and expertise, the training focuses on three topic areas: 1) ethical issues surrounding the delivery of public education and media interviews, 2) multicultural competencies with specific emphasis on providing interviews/programs in a culturally-inclusive manner, and 3) applied training and practice in the delivery of programs/interviews during which participants can learn these skills in safe, hands-on environment and receive feedback. Those GPA members who successfully complete each program in this three-part series would then be automatically eligible for inclusion on the Speakers Bureau.

    This training will be regularly offered to provide additional opportunities for other GPA members to become Speakers Bureau participants at a later time. This training will be offered at least once each biennium and GPA members will receive continuing education credit for the completion of each aspect of this training.

    Once a member has been selected to be a part of the Speakers Bureau, she/he will remain on it without any renewal process. However, for Speakers Bureau participants who are regularly receiving poor reviews/ratings, the Chair of the Committee, in consultation with the Executive Director, has the right to request additional training and/or mentoring for this individual or possible removal from the Speakers Bureau, depending upon the severity and type of concerns.

    • $20: Student GPA Members (Will not receive a CE certificate)
    • $130: Non-members
    Registration (After October 16, 2015)
    • $80: GPA Members
    • $30: Student Members (Will not receive a CE certificate)
    • $140: Non-members
    Must be logged into member profile to receive member rate.


    Cancellation Policy:
    Registrants must cancel through Amy Dietrich only via email or phone (contacting other staff members/leadership does not guarantee your cancellation.) No faxes or mail cancellations will be accepted.
    Cancellation Fee: $35
    Refunds will not be given for cancellations within five (5) business days prior to the workshop date.
