Tuesday, June 10

Personality Assessment Instruments for Executive Coaching and Assessment: Hogan, 16PF, and Birkman
Andrew G. Neiner, PhD, Kenneth Jackson, PhD, and Dan Whitenack, PhD

The workshop provides an overview of three of the most popular personality assessment instruments used by psychologists in executive assessment and coaching: Hogan, 16PF, and Birkman. These instruments will be compared/contrasted along the following dimensions: development, validation, administration, report generation, interpretation, norms, training/qualifications, and pricing. The capabilities/limitations of each instrument related to age, race, sex, culture, and other diversity factors will be reviewed. Three instrument-specific experts will lead the presentations and discussions. Participants will be asked to share their evaluations and experiences with these instruments. Participants will be provided with references for learning more about each instrument.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the similarities and differences among the Hogan, the 16PF, and the Birkman.
  2. Explain the development of each instrument including validation and norms.
  3. Describe the pros of cons of each instrument (Hogan, 16PF, Birkman) as they relate to employee selection and executive coaching.

Wednesday, August 20

Multiple Methods of Leadership Development
Wanda J. Hayes, PhD and Dave Brookmire, PhD

This workshop will cover different methods for identifying high potential leadership, and how leaders are developed at various points in their career cycle, from on-boarding through senior executives. Case studies will be utilized to demonstrate the methods, and current trends in leadership development will be discussed.

  1. Describe different methods used to develop leaders and apply concepts using case studies
  2. Assess various methods for identifying leadership potential
  3. Discuss the role of I/O psychologists in assisting senior leaders adapt to new cultures and/or roles
  4. Discuss how leadership development efforts can be tailored to address diversity issues

Optimizing the Power of Action Learning
Michele I. Mobley, PhD, Hodges L. Golson, PhD, and John Morrison, PhD

Action learning is a group problem-solving tool that can be used by organizations to solve important, complex problems. It takes advantage of the input of employees and gives them a tool to: resolve problems, take action to solve problems, and learn and develop. This workshop will present the six components of action learning to the group and then will have the group practice action learning to solve a real problem that they identify. We will discuss the ability of action learning to tap into the expertise of employees from various ages, races, genders, cultures, etc.

  1. Define action learning and list the conditions when it is and is not appropriate to use
  2. Describe the six components of action learning
  3. Demonstrate how to apply action learning to solve a particular problem
  4. Explain how action learning can take advantage of the expertise of people of different races, ages, genders, cultures, tenures, experiences, backgrounds, etc.

Performance Management: Best Practices and Current Controversies
Randall H. Lucius, PhD and David Bracken, PhD

Performance Management is a process that all organizations use to some degree, although many do a poor job of it. This workshop will review recent guidelines provided by I/O psychologists for the Society of Human Resource Management on best practices in performance management, and will provide examples/case studies of these guidelines in practice. Multi-rater performance reviews is growing in popularity as a PM technique, yet many still resist this methodology for a variety of reasons which will be discussed. PM training techniques, which reduce bias and ensure fair treatment of all individuals regardless of background, will also be discussed.

  1. Describe and articulate what is a competency, and how to write competencies
  2. Describe and articulate what is frame-of-reference training, and why it is important
  3. Discuss what is multi-rater feedback, and when it is/is not appropriate for managing performance

Wednesday, November 19

Ethical Considerations of Licensure: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How...and If
Linda Hoopes, PhD and Donna Sylvan, PhD

In this session we explore how the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct assist us in making decisions related to seeking licensure, maintaining licensure and practicing psychology across jurisdictional boundaries. Opinions and practice related to licensure vary within the I/O community. Our discussion will respect these differences and include diverse perspectives. We will solicit input from practitioners not seeking licensure, licensed practitioners, a graduate program in psychology, psychologists involved in international issues, and Georgia’s State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

CE Hours: 3 (Ethics)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Evaluate how the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct assist I/O psychologists in their decisions related to licensure.
  2. Discuss any potential differences in how ethical principles impact decisions related to licensure based on how I/O practitioners are employed (e.g., internal vs. external).
  3. Explore what is currently being covered in a sample I/O graduate program regarding ethics and licensure.
  4. Identify any potential ethical concerns related to changing requirements related to the practice of I/O psychology occurring at the state, national and international levels and any implications related to seeking and/or maintaining licensure.
